How should traffic-light-controlled intersections be designed so that they not only take pedestrians and cyclists into account but also truly support them?

The FFG research project CrossConnect addressed this question. At this year’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Traffic Summit in Eisenstadt, Konstantin Mizera (PLANUM) presented the project’s findings.

In collaboration with experts from Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Austria, a study was conducted to examine how traffic intersections can be designed to be safer, more comfortable, and more attractive for active mobility. This goes beyond individual signal phases or structural details; rather, it addresses the question of how intersections as a whole must be conceived and planned from the perspective of pedestrians and cyclists.

The results show that anyone who wants to promote active mobility must also rethink the design of intersections.
