How should traffic-light-controlled intersections be designed so that they not only take pedestrians and cyclists into account but also truly support them?

The FFG research project CrossConnect addressed this question. At this year’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Traffic Summit in Eisenstadt, Konstantin Mizera (PLANUM) presented the project’s findings.

In collaboration with experts from Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Austria, a study was conducted to examine how traffic intersections can be designed to be safer, more comfortable, and more attractive for active mobility. This goes beyond individual signal phases or structural details; rather, it addresses the question of how intersections as a whole must be conceived and planned from the perspective of pedestrians and cyclists.

The results show that anyone who wants to promote active mobility must also rethink the design of intersections.

New and innovative airport shuttle services can improve access to airports. But how great is their actual potential for use—and what impact might they have on traffic?

The SMAC research project is addressing these questions by developing an integrated approach to evaluating innovative airport access options. Initial findings were presented at the German Aerospace Congress (DLRK2026) in Aachen.

Patrick Stern (PLANUM) served as the SMAC project manager and, in his presentation titled “
: From Mobility Behavior to Impact: RP/SP Survey and Simulation-Based Evaluation of Innovative Airport Access Options” (
) during the “Airport and Mobility Concepts” session, discussed, among other things:

  • Results of the Needs Assessment and Requirements Analysis
  • Integration of the survey results into a macroscopic traffic model
  • Simulation of innovative modes of transportation such as UAM (Urban Air Mobility, e.g., drone taxis) and autonomous shuttles

We are thrilled by the tremendous interest in SMAC, the engaging discussions, and the professional exchange that took place at the event!
