On June 18, Kurt Fallast, Managing Director of PLANUM Fallast & Partner, presented the latest findings on the spatial impacts of the new rail connection and the revised schedules as part of the ÖVG event “Transformation Through Connection – 6 Months of the Koralmbahn.” The event took place in the morning at Graz Central Station and in the afternoon at the Carinthian Chamber of Commerce in Klagenfurt.
The presentation focused on the results of the recently completed AREA SÜD mobility study. The analyses show how the Koralmbahn is changing accessibility in southern Austria: Not only are Graz and Klagenfurt becoming closer in terms of travel time, but numerous rural communities are also benefiting from significantly improved connections.

Thanks to shorter public transportation travel times, workplaces, educational institutions, and recreational activities will be more quickly and easily accessible to many people. In this way, the Koralm Railway not only strengthens the connection between the two federal states of Styria and Carinthia, but also makes an important contribution to sustainable and climate-friendly mobility.

The study’s findings underscore the potential of an efficient public transportation infrastructure as a key location factor and a driver of regional development and equal opportunity—especially for people living outside urban centers.

PLANUM also benefits directly from the new connection: Since the opening of the Koralm Railway, the Klagenfurt office can be reached from the Graz headquarters in about one hour door-to-door. This has nearly cut the travel time in half compared to the previous route.

PLANUM is pleased to have been part of this event and would like to thank the other speakers from Graz—Dr. Klaus Schneider, DI Alfred Nagelschmied, and Mag. Adrian Plessin—for their valuable contributions and fascinating insights into the many facets of the Koralmbahn and its significance for the development of the southern region.

The Koralm Railway will soon go into operation – a milestone that we at PLANUM are eagerly awaiting. We have been part of this extraordinary project since the very first feasibility study. At the start of the final phase, we would like to take the opportunity to show how PLANUM and IBV-Fallast have accompanied and helped shape the Koralm Railway over the years.

🔎 We are currently working on the AreaSouth mobility study, which will provide important impetus for future developments. We will be able to share further exciting insights with you at the beginning of next year.

In the documentary “From Noric Iron to Area South”, the Austria picture is dedicated to the development of Carinthia. It shows the development from a traditional industrial location to a modern center in the Alps-Adriatic region.
A central theme here is the Koralm Railway, which will soon go into operation – a project of the century that opens up new opportunities and possibilities, but also brings with it challenges and tasks.

The Carinthian Chamber of Commerce and ORF Carinthia hosted a preview of the documentary.
PLANUM, which has been significantly involved in the planning of the Koralm Railway since 1998, was of course represented at this special event. (see picture)

PLANUM has been supporting the Koralm Railway for more than two decades

ÖVG’s exclusive excursion in June 2025 gave us the rare opportunity to take a special trip on the Graz – St. Paul – Graz route and experience the Koralm Tunnel up close. The stop at the evacuation and rescue position in the middle of the Koralm Tunnel showed us the impressive safety precautions in place.

The management and employees are delighted – our locations in Graz and Klagenfurt will soon be just 50 minutes apart. The Koralm Railway, one of Austria’s largest infrastructure projects, will permanently change mobility in the south of the country.

PLANUM is proud to have made a significant contribution to the planning of this project of the century since 1998. Our team was able to contribute extensive expertise, particularly in the area of noise studies. We also carried out risk analyses for the temporary routing of Koralm railway traffic via the southern line (Feldkirchen-Werndorf section).

PLANUM also supported the route selection process – from the definition of the planning corridor to the optimal route variant between Werndorf and the provincial border – as well as the preparation of the environmental impact statements (EIS) for several sections.

The focal points of our planning work were:

  • Spatial development, transport and infrastructure

  • Noise and local spatial planning

  • Townscape, material and cultural assets

  • Leisure, recreation and tourism

PLANUM also took on public relations tasks to accompany the EIA process.
